Elos Medical IPL technology
Elos IPL Medical Grade for Brown Spots, Facial Veins, Rosacea and Pigmentation.
Elos IPL is the treatment of choice at Palm Clinic for facial veins, rosacea, pigment and collagen stimulation.
At Palm Clinic we have several years experience of IPL technology with full strength medical IPL systems. Elos IPL with the medical strength SRA head has additional benefits for many patients but we will decide at the initial communication which technology will best suit you or whether a combination of technologies would work more efficiently.
“After my first ELOS IPL at Palm Clinic, it was the first time my face had had a clear and fresh complexion for years!”
Ben - age 46
The IPL arm of Elos targets melanin and oxyhaemoglobin to produce the effect of improving pigment and broken capillaries in the face, neck and hands. This is augmented by the bipolar radiofrequency arm of Elos which targets the deeper dermis to further stimulate collagen and assist with the treatment of rosacea and pigment change.
Elos IPL is also a significant advance for effective long term hair reduction. At Palm Clinic we have two laser systems for effective long term hair reduction – Coolglide (1064nm NDYAg laser), and Elos IPL. We are therefore able to treat all skin types and dark hair colours.
Elos IPL Hair Removal
Safe hair reduction is now a reality. The number of necessary treatments depends on hair color and skin type, and the part of the face or body to be treated. Usually, four to six treatments are required for substantial hair reduction. Lighter hair will require a higher number of treatments.
Vortex Heating targets and damages the hair follicle. The Vortex is created when the RF current — the destructive energy — encircles and heats the hair follicle damaging the follicle itself not just the hair shaft.
Conditions which may exclude you from Elos IPL treatment include pregnancy, pacemakers, active infection in the treatment area, a history of keloid scarring, suspicious skin lesions in the treatment area, tattoos in the area and use of Accutane in the previous six months.
It is important that the area to be treated is checked medically for suspicious moles or skin cancer before Elos IPL treatment. This can be performed at Palm Clinic.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is IPL?
Palm Clinic has used Photoderm IPL treatment since 2001. Photoderm IPL is essentially an adjustable laser which can vary the number of pulses and the energy of the light to target different layers in the skin. Since 2005 we upgraded the Photoderm IPL to ELOS IPL Medical Grade which adds radiofrequency to the medical grade intense pulse light (IPL). Elos is the first technology that used combined energies to effectively and gently restore and rejuvenate your skin. Our patients are delighted with the fast visible results of smoother and brighter skin without significant downtime.
Benefits of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
Dr John Barrett of Palm Clinic says IPL has advantages over other laser treatments. Elos IPL operates at a range of light wavelengths unlike standard lasers which use only one or two wavelengths. A range of filters are used which enable the ELOS IPL to target different chromophores such as melanin, oxyhaemoglobin and collagen. This means we are able to treat a variety of conditions such as freckles, sun spots, facial veins, permanent hair reduction, brown pigment and brown spots, as well as stimulate collagen production.
What to Expect During the Procedure
At the initial consultation with one of Palm Clinics doctors or laser nurses a full laser checklist will be carried out. Any suspicious skin lesions will be examined with a dermatoscope by a doctor before treatment.
Before treatment you will need to avoid the sun for 4 to 6 weeks and use a good sunblock on the area you will have treated. You can not have treatment if you have a fake or real tan.
During treatment, the laser nurse at Palm Clinic enters your details such as skin colour, body area and skin type to generate specific settings for your skin into a computer. Multiple wavelengths of light are then produced (according to your details). A pulse produces a high energy flash of light that passes through normal skin, concentrating their energy at different levels. These concentrated energy flashes of light serve to treat problem areas. Treatment sessions usually take around 30 minutes and consist of a series of "light flashes" on the skin. These feel like a "flick" from a rubber band. After treatment your skin will be red and inflamed, depending on the specific energy level of treatment and the type of problem you have. Many patients return to normal activities immediately after treatment. Make up may be applied immediately after treatment.
After treatment with Elos IPL you will have a mild sunburn-like sensation which lasts 2-24 hours. Mild swelling or redness may accompany this but it usually resolves in two to three days. Apply a pure Aloe Vera lotion to the treatment area for 10-15 minutes every hour for the next four hours if needed. Until redness has completely resolved avoid aggressive rubbing and exfoliants. There will be darkening of any brown spots. The brown spots will gradually go over a period of 7 to10 days and can be covered with make up. Brown spots typically go with one or two treatments. Gradual and cumulative improvement of skin tone and red veins is typically achieved in three to five treatments and we schedule these treatments three to six weeks apart.
Conditions that exclude you from Elos IPL treatments include pregnancy, pacemakers, active infection, a history of keloid scarring, a suspicious mole in the treatment area and RoAccutane treatment in the previous six months. If you get cold sores please advise us and we will cover the treatment with a prescribed antiviral agent such as acyclovir.
