Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers like Juvederm, Restylane and collagen are used to soften and reduce lines and wrinkles, lip enhancement and to produce a "liquid facelift" through volumising.

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances injected into the skin to physically lift and sculpt it, correcting wrinkles, folds, scars and asymmetries of the face. Dermal filler: for resculpting and shaping lips, cheeks, dowturned mouth corners, chin, jawline.

The safest dermal fillers are non-permanent gels made from either collagen (a protein) or hyaluranon (a carbohydrate). Because both collagen and hyaluranon are naturally present in the skin, but decline with aging, fillers made from these substances are an ideal choice for rejuvenation. Collagen has largely been replaced by hyaluranon fillers like Juvederm and Restylane.

Think of the face as it ages as being like a partially deflated balloon.  The loss of fat, bone absorption and reduced muscle tone causes the face to deflate leading to flattening of the cheek structure, lines and wrinkles plus or minus sagging of the jowls.  Replacing the fat with dermal fillers re-inflates the face producing a very natural look that generally takes years off the facial features.  Generally this will give a much more"natural" appearance than a facelift. We call this process "volumising" or the "liquid facelift".

Dermal fillers last from 6-24 months depending on which one is used.  The latest dermal fillers at Palm Clinic include a local anaesthetic called lignocaine in the filler which markedly reduces the pain of injection making the whole process much more relaxing.  If necessary a "nerve block" like you have at the dentist can also be used to completely block any pain.

What can dermal fillers do?

Fillers are mainly used to disguise the signs of aging. They can also be used to correct some scars, plump up the lips or correct asymmetries of the face by adding volume.

Ageing of the face consists of both fine lines forming and the contours of the face changing. Different fillers are used to address both these problems.

Correcting fine lines

Lip lines, frown lines, forehead lines, smile lines and crow’s feet can all be treated by the fillers likeRestylane and Cosmoderm. Juvederm and Restylane is made from hyaluranon, while Cosmoderm is human collagen grown in the laboratory. These fillers can be used alone for fine lines or as an adjunct to Botox for more stubborn wrinkles.

Re-contouring the face

'Volumising' is a technique that can achieve a compete facial rejuvenation - either by itself, or in combination with fine line treatments. By placing hyaluranon fillers like Juvederm Voluma, Juvederm UltraPlus, Restylane SubQ  deep under the skin, it restores your youthful contours safely and effectively.  This has been referred to as pillow face or pillow cheeks after some celebrities who have been a little overdone.  Most New Zealand men and women prefer a more natural balanced look.

Often a combination of volume and fine line treatments layered together over a couple of sessions are needed to get a really top-notch facial rejuvenation.

Lips

The hyaluranon dermal fillers are ideal for increasing lip size and enhancing lip shape. Whether the lips have always been small, or reduced over the years, they can be plumped up in just half an hour. Where necessary the border of the lip can be re-defined. In achieving a natural (non-trout-pout) result, balance and restraint are vital. The lip should be in harmony with the age of the face, and should follow the ratio of 1:1.6 for top:bottom lip (i.e. the bottom lip should be bigger). Improving the appearance of the lips may also require attention to the contours around the mouth.

What is the advantage of dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are a quick and safe way to rejuvenate the face without having to undergo surgery or a general anaesthetic. Palm Clinic has access to a large range of fillers used by highly trained staff to achieve an optimum "natural" result for you.

How long do dermal fillers last?

Fillers last between 6-24 months depending on the product used and the area it is used in.  There are "permanent" fillers available but at Palm Clinic we prefer to use temporary fillers because whilst permanent fillers are usually safe to use if you do have a problem with side effects from a permanent filler the side effect can be permanent also.

What are the side effects of dermal fillers?

The most common side effect is temporary discomfort and possible bruising and swelling.  With gentle technique we aim to keep bruising and swelling to a minimum.  It is best if you don't exercise just before and after your treatment and avoid aspirin or anti-inflammatories for two weeks before treatment if you want to minimise bruising.

It is very rare with temporary fillers to have problems after the first two days but it is possible to have an allergy to the product.  This is very rare and at Palm Clinic we have a product called Hyalase to breakdown the product of an allergy ever occurred.

What if I don't like the result?

This would be very unusual as nearly everyone is delighted with the improvement that dermal fillers make. However if you really didn't like the result it may be that you need a simple adjustment with a little more product.

In a worst case scenario we can remove the product with an enzyme called hyalase. Your Palm Clinic doctor is always available to discuss any concerns you may have. Remember we are there to provide the result "you" want!

Are dermal fillers painful?

New dermal fillers have local anaesthetic inside the filler and Palm Clinic has been one of the first Clinics to introduce these to New Zealand.  This makes the treatment much easier for clients.  If necessary we can also use a "nerve block" like you have at the dentist to completely numb the area. Once the fillers are in place they are not at all painful but can take a few hours to settle down after the initial treatment.

What is the cost of dermal fillers?

The cost of dermal fillers varies upwards from $500 for 0.5ml and $750-800 for one ml. Different fillers have different costs.  We will discuss the likely cost structure with you before treatment so there are no surprises.  If you need dermal fillers for volumising areas like the cheeks the cost is generally more as the additional volume required is usually more than if the dermal fillers are used for wrinkles and lines.
