As the skin ages there are a number of things that happen both from chronological ageing and from external factors such as sun exposure, smoking and environmental pollutants.

• The dermis thins, which gives the appearance of dry skin and makes it look less vibrant.
• The epidermis (outer skin layer) also thins and develops a thicker layer of dead cells on top called the stratum corneum.
• Ageing skin becomes discoloured from brown pigmentation and broken thread or facial veins.
• Ageing skin loses collagen and elastin which leads to poor elasticity and dry skin.
• The face loses support due to resorption of bone, poor facial muscle tone and loss of fat. The structures beneath the skin shrink away, leading to sagging of the skin.
• There is an increase in pore size and a duller texture to ageing skin.
• Scars such as acne scarring can leave depressed marks on the skin.
• Wrinkles and lines appear.
