Collagen is a natural dermal filler substance which softens fine lines and wrinkles creating a natural youthful appearance.

Collagen is a natural part of the skin that is reduced as we age. Collagen injections simply replace the body’s natural collagen that disappears over time. The collagen is used to "fill" and smooth out facial lines.

Human collagen ('Cosmoderm') grown in the laboratory to treat burns patients is now available for cosmetic treatment of fine lines. Palm Clinic is one of New Zealands most experienced collagen injectors having used collagen on hundreds of clients since 1995. Collagen has however largely been replaced by hyaluranon dermal fillers such as Juvederm.

Juvederm has the advantage of longevity. Collagen fillers typically lasted for 4-6 months whereas Juvederm can last from nine months right through to two years depending on which strength of product is used and which site the dermal filler is placed in. Because of the viscosity of hyaluranon fillers they can also be used under the skin in the new practice of volumising which is used effectively to produce more youthful contours in the cheeks to producwe the "liquid facelift".

What can I expect during a collagen treatment?

The procedure of injecting the collagen under the lines is very simple. The actual procedure is very quick usually taking less than 30 minutes. The collagen is injected in tiny amounts under the lines. The effect is immediate and looks very natural.

Initially there will be a little redness and mild swelling which varies in intensity from person to person. This is easily covered by make-up and soon fades. The effect lasts for most people for 4-6 months. There are some Palm Clinic patients who have reported that the effect lasts up to a year.

There are a few clients who find the collagen disappears quicker than four months and they usually do better with other dermal fillers.

Are Collagen treatments painful?

The treatment can be uncomfortable for some people so a range of options are used to minimise or abolish the discomfort. Some people have a nerve block just like that given at the dentist. Others use a local anaesthetic cream (EMLA) which is applied 90 minutes and again 30 minutes prior to the appointment.

Some people prefer to just use ice before and after the injection while others don't need any form of pain relief at all.

Who cannot use Collagen?

Anyone can use collagen dermal fillers provided they have not had any previous allergy (which is rare) and are not pregnant. Collagen should be used with caution for people with connective tissue diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and scleroderma or people who are taking medication that affects the immune system.

What is the cost of Collagen treatment?

The human based collagen Cosmoderm costs NZ$750 per ml.
